SRDU’s third studio CD, “Freedom’s Marching Backwards” reflected the creative political humor of the band as well as the intelligence of their music. It moved away from guitar oriented rock towards more harmonic arrangements, keyboards, caustic lyrical content, and tighter song structures. Stephen Slaybaugh of the Columbus Alive describes the music as; “matching vaguely humorous and pointed commentary to a disjointed din of buzzing guitars, keyboard whine and snappy rhythms. The band’s sound is distinctly Midwestern, often recalling the Great Plains and consisting of part pop and part lo-fi punk“.
